Flooding closes Kūhiō Highway near Hanalei Bridge on Kauaʻi

Heavy rain on Kauaʻi caused flooding in rivers and low-lying areas, including around Hanalei Bridge.

The National Weather Service warning was set to run until 11:45 p.m.; another update said flood alerts had been canceled as the rain eased.

Kūhiō Highway remained closed near Hanalei Bridge until further notice, while other roads had ponding and poor visibility.

A community refuge area at Hale Halawai in Hanalei remained open as a last-resort option for people who needed somewhere to go.

Officials said people should consider staying in a sound home outside flood-prone areas, and anyone going to the refuge should bring their own supplies.

Flooding and road hazards made travel risky, so officials urged drivers to use extreme caution and warned people not to cross fast-moving or rising water.

Other refuge areas were on standby, and officials said they would announce if more were opened.
