Elisa says she was sexually abused at age eight and hopes to help others

Italian singer Elisa says she was sexually abused at age eight and that the experience marked her for life.

She says she told her mother only many years later and did not seek help from a therapist until she was 48.

Elisa says she is learning not to blame herself and wants survivors to know that sexual violence is never their fault.

She is sharing her experience through her work and in support of Una, nessuna centomila, a women’s movement she helped found.

Her new project, Kintsugi, includes a film and an album, and draws on personal pain and change.

It also reflects her separation from her husband last September after 17 years together.

The album is due out on November 27, while the film has been presented at the Rome Film Festival.
