Bangsamoro region begins elected government after years of interim rule

The Bangsamoro region in the southern Philippines has begun elected rule after its first parliamentary election on Sept.

14.

Parliament members chose Abdulraof Macacua, a former military chief of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, as chief minister, ending an interim administration that began in 2019.

The autonomous region was created under a 2014 peace deal between the Philippine government and the MILF, after decades of conflict that displaced millions and killed at least 150,000 people, according to government estimates.

Residents describe better security and living conditions under the interim government, including welfare support for former combatant Burhan Undalayan and his family.

Young people hope the new government will expand education and improve safety, while former fighters say some promised economic support has not been delivered.

The transition is a major step toward self-governance and lasting peace, but shootings and explosions during the election left five supporters of a rival party dead, according to that party.
