Indian households buying dark chocolate rose 45% in year to August

The number of Indian households buying dark chocolate rose 45% in the year to August.

The increase follows growth of 28.2% in 2024 and 11.3% in 2025, but dark chocolate is still bought by only 8.5% of households.

Urban consumers account for 87% of home purchases, and growth is concentrated in cities with more than one million people.

Dark chocolate, defined as chocolate containing more than 50% cocoa, remains a small part of India's chocolate market.

Quick-commerce orders and changing tastes are helping drive demand, alongside interest in health and wellness.

Wider growth faces barriers including price, consumer preferences and limited distribution in rural areas.

If the trend continues, dark chocolate could become a bigger driver of chocolate-market growth.
