Mexico’s electoral council chief says she will resign
Guadalupe Taddei said she would resign as president of Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, known as the INE.
She said she would submit her resignation to the Chamber of Deputies after allegations of corruption involving her and close associates.
The 10 remaining INE council members could choose an interim president while lawmakers begin the search for a successor.
The selection process calls for lawmakers to issue a public call, while a five-member technical committee evaluates applicants and sends a shortlist to the Chamber’s political coordination board.
The Chamber must approve the new president with a two-thirds vote of members present; if political groups cannot agree on candidates, a lottery is used to determine the choice.
Former electoral officials say an interim appointment would allow the INE to continue operating as the selection proceeds.
The next president’s appointment and leadership decisions will shape the INE’s response to its current crisis, though no timeline for choosing a successor is given.
Mexico’s top electoral official, Guadalupe Taddei, said she will resign as president of the National Electoral Institute.
She announced the decision on Sunday after facing mounting pressure over a corruption probe.
PRI leader Alejandro Moreno said the resignation should not stop investigations into alleged corruption, questioned contracts and possible conflicts of interest.
Moreno called for Taddei’s successor to be politically independent.

The resignation does not erase responsibilities or can be used to guarantee impunity. Mexico deserves to know the whole truth.
The INE is not a Morena office or an employment agency for its loyalists.
