Palestinian elections postponed to September 2027

Mahmoud Abbas has postponed Palestinian legislative and presidential elections until September 11, 2027.

The legislative vote had been scheduled for November 2026, while the presidential election was due in early 2027.

The Palestinian Authority cited Israeli restrictions on the electoral commission and worsening conditions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The elections have been delayed repeatedly, and the last Palestinian parliamentary vote was held in 2006, when Hamas defeated Fatah.

Since fighting between the factions in 2007, Hamas has governed Gaza and Fatah has led the West Bank administration, leaving Abbas without a renewed electoral mandate.

Analysts say a possible alliance between Hamas and a faction led by former Fatah official Mohammed Dahlan also threatened Fatah's electoral plans.

The European Union regrets the postponement and says democratic elections are long overdue.

Fatah official Jibril Rajoub said Palestinian factions would prepare for a national dialogue before next year's vote, and the EU says it could send election observers.
