Dodgers’ Dalton Rushing to Have Surgery on Right Elbow

Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing is set for right elbow surgery to repair a torn ligament.

The expected procedure uses an internal brace, and recovery could keep him from catching for about nine months, though he may be able to hit sooner.

Rushing, 25, backs up Will Smith and also played at first base and designated hitter this season.

He first went on the injured list with the ligament tear on the day of the trade deadline, then returned briefly but had only eight hitless plate appearances.

Before the injury, he hit 12 home runs and posted a .246 batting average in 253 plate appearances.

His exact return timing depends on surgery and rehabilitation, and injuries could create a chance to rejoin the team before he is cleared to catch.

Hunter Feduccia and Eliezer Alfonzo are the Dodgers’ only other backup catchers on the 40-man roster.
