Spain's election campaign shifts between housing, a train tragedy and corruption

Spain's election campaign has no single issue dominating the debate, as parties compete to shape what voters focus on.

The election was called amid anger over the difficulty of accessing housing, but a train tragedy pushed the issue into the background within a month.

In a polarised country, the issues discussed can influence which voters turn out: security and immigration tend to mobilise the right, while public healthcare tends to mobilise the left.

The PP and Vox are both campaigning to remove Pedro Sánchez from government, with the PP using the slogan “The necessary change.”

After the accident in Urda, PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo presented his party as experienced and capable, distancing it from Vox.

After Transport Minister Óscar Puente resigned, the PP returned to its corruption criticism, with Miguel Tellado linking investigations involving the Transport Ministry to the accident and saying, “Corruption costs lives.”
