Corsican event highlights suicide risk among farmers

On 8 October, farmers and health groups held a mental health event in Ghisonaccia, Corsica.

They screened *Au nom de la Terre*, a film about a farmer facing severe problems, to open a discussion about suicide in rural communities.

In France in 2022, the suicide death risk for people insured through the agricultural scheme was 66% higher than for people in other health insurance schemes.

The issue affects farmers on the island and their families, and one local farmer described fearing that a relative’s past suicide attempt could happen again.

Organisers encouraged people not to face distress alone and to talk about it.

In recent weeks, farmers have also staged major mobilisations in Bastia and Ajaccio, but no further action from the event was announced.
