Guatemalan man sentenced to 30 years over deadly Texas smuggling operation
A US judge sentenced Guatemalan man Rigoberto Ramon Miranda Orozco to 30 years in prison for his role in a migrant-smuggling operation.
In June 2022, 53 migrants died inside a tractor-trailer near San Antonio, Texas, after its air conditioning failed during a journey from Laredo.
The truck carried 64 migrants who had travelled from Guatemala through Mexico, and prosecutors said some had paid as much as $15,000 to cross the US border.
Miranda Orozco admitted to arranging travel and accommodation for two people who died and one who survived with serious injuries.
Nearly 20 people have been convicted in the US and Guatemala in connection with the deaths, including the operation’s US leader, who received a life sentence, and his assistant, who was sentenced to 83 years.
Further proceedings are pending for other people involved, including the truck’s driver.
