Korean music critic Kang Heon dies at 64

South Korean music critic Kang Heon died on 20 October at 64.

He had been chair of the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service since December 2025, and the cause of death was not disclosed.

From the 1990s, he helped expand Korean popular music criticism by examining how songs reflected their social and historical setting.

He wrote about artists including Seo Taiji and Shin Hae-chul and worked across film, music theatre, teaching and cultural administration.

His work helped treat popular music as a serious subject for cultural discussion, and colleagues remembered him as a sharp, influential writer.

He also studied traditional fortune-telling and published a book on the subject.

His funeral is scheduled for 23 October, with burial at Yongin Pyeong-on Forest.
