KNMI issues its first regional yellow weather warning for dense fog

The Netherlands’ weather institute, the KNMI, issued its first regional yellow warning for dense fog on Saturday.

The warning covered a defined area in southern Utrecht, northern North Brabant and small parts of Gelderland and South Holland.

Visibility could fall below 200 metres, so drivers were advised to slow down and leave more space.

Until 1 November, KNMI weather warnings were issued for whole provinces, even when the danger affected only part of one.

That could leave large areas under warnings that meteorologists considered unnecessary and made it harder for event organisers and safety regions to prepare.

The smaller warning area identifies where fog may cause problems, rather than covering entire provinces.

People can check the KNMI website or app by location, and the institute says the warning information can also be downloaded for use in maps and other tools.
