Lyon prosecutor orders probe into man’s injury during protest

A 43-year-old Lyon resident was seriously injured on October 24 while going out to buy food near a protest against the rising cost of living.

Jonathan said he was not taking part in the demonstration and was walking on Saint-Jérôme Street when he heard police throwing grenades nearby.

A 2-to-3-centimetre metal fragment pierced his chest and lung, and he needed surgery that removed a small part of his lung.

The fragment stopped about two centimetres from his heart, according to Jonathan.

Lyon prosecutors have assigned a probe to the police watchdog, France’s IGPN, to establish how he was hurt.

The fragment is being examined, but its source has not been established, and it is not known whether it came from police equipment.

Jonathan remains in hospital, and investigators are expected to determine where the metal came from.
