Storms damage tobacco farms in Misiones, affecting about 3,000 families

Storms damaged tobacco crops and farm buildings in Misiones, a province in northeastern Argentina.

The storms brought hail, strong winds and heavy rain, and about 3,000 farming families are estimated to be affected.

That figure is preliminary and may change as the Misiones agriculture ministry and local groups assess losses.

Tobacco is the main source of income for many rural families, and damage to both crops and curing sheds can make it harder to resume production.

Provincial lawmaker Héctor Bárbaro is urging immediate help, including supplies, credit or subsidies, while criticizing delays in approving national tobacco-fund assistance.

Officials are documenting losses to support requests for aid and a possible provincial agricultural emergency decree.

Bárbaro said a meeting planned for the following week could unblock assistance, and warned that growers might travel to Buenos Aires if there are no solutions.
