Five countries seek Nigeria’s backing for climate finance reform

Five countries asked Nigeria to back climate finance reforms at a meeting in Abuja ahead of COP31, the next United Nations climate conference.

The countries are Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Türkiye and Australia, which cooperate as the MIKTA group.

They want climate finance to be easier to access and better suited to vulnerable countries, including those in Africa and the Pacific.

Nigeria said it was ready to work with MIKTA and highlighted adaptation finance, local climate action and a fair transition as priorities.

African negotiators say the continent needs more international support because it is highly vulnerable to climate change despite contributing relatively little to global emissions.

COP31 is scheduled for Antalya from November 9 to 20, with Türkiye holding the presidency and Australia leading negotiations.

Türkiye says the conference should focus on carrying out commitments and maintain momentum towards COP32 in Ethiopia.
