D’Alema accuses Meloni of treating protests as a security issue
Massimo D’Alema criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over her response to protests across the country.
He said the government was treating unrest as a matter of security, arrests and force instead of addressing protesters’ concerns.
The protests include truckers blocking highways, farmers in revolt and young people taking to the streets, sometimes violently.
D’Alema also challenged Meloni’s criticism of Milan judge Tiziana Landoni, who ordered Youssef Siher released after declining to confirm his detention.
He said this decision showed judicial independence, which he linked to the government’s proposed constitutional reform of the justice system, due to be put to a referendum.
D’Alema said Meloni’s response raised concerns about the government’s approach to judges and citizens.
Massimo D’Alema accused Giorgia Meloni’s government of treating protests as a public-order problem rather than engaging with their causes.
Speaking on La7’s Otto e mezzo, D’Alema said the government responds to protests with security measures, beatings and preventive arrests.
He criticised Meloni for attacking a Milan judge who had declined to validate Youssef Siher’s detention and ordered his release.
D’Alema said Meloni’s criticism of the judge conflicted with her government’s judicial reform, which he said was based on concerns about judicial independence.

What people are saying
I find it hard to take Meloni seriously. The head of a government whose highways are blocked by truck drivers, whose farmers are in revolt, and whose young people are in the streets, sometimes with violent acts, is able to respond only in terms of security, beatings, preventive arrests, criminalisation.
All this is a sign of the decline of politics, of its ability to understand the country, of politics being transformed into a policing logic. It is very worrying, for judges and for all citizens.
Now that we have a judge who proves not only independent of the public prosecutor, but who rules against him, Meloni should celebrate as a defender of civil liberties.
