China urges Taiwan to restore mainland tourist visits
China's Taiwan Affairs Office urged Taiwan to allow mainland residents to visit again at a news briefing on October 14.
Spokesperson Chen Binhua said restrictions on cross-strait tourism were slowing Taiwan's recovery, echoing concerns raised in a question about the island's tourism industry.
He said mainland visitors had previously brought business to Taiwan's tourism sector and helped people on both sides better understand one another.
The office said mainland travel during China's National Day holiday reached 826 million trips, with spending of 738.375 billion yuan, both higher than a year earlier.
Chen blamed Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authorities for obstructing tourism exchanges, a claim made by the mainland office.
He called on them to remove barriers and resume mainland travel to Taiwan, warning that continued restrictions would harm local businesses and residents.
