No rule bars KPU commissioners facing ethics complaints from seeking new terms
Indonesia’s KPU commissioners may seek new terms as the country prepares to select the election commission’s next members.
The commissioners have faced complaints to the election-organiser ethics council, DKPP, over their handling of a challenge to Vice-President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s eligibility in the 2024 election.
DKPP had received five complaints by October 14 about the matter.
Lawmaker Ahmad Irawan says no rule bars applicants who have received ethics sanctions from applying again.
He says the president’s selection committee would first assess candidates, and parliament would later consider the seriousness of any ethics violation.
Parliament’s Commission II is reviewing ethics-enforcement rules, including how decisions should affect a person’s eligibility for office.
The selection process is expected to take place again, but the rules on how past sanctions affect candidates have not yet been settled.
There is no rule barring current KPU commissioners who have faced ethics sanctions from seeking another term, according to lawmaker Ahmad Irawan.
Irawan said the law does not specify whether DKPP ethics decisions must affect candidates’ prospects.
The selection committee and the House of Representatives would assess candidates’ quality, integrity and the severity of any ethics violations.
The KPU commissioners have faced complaints to the election ethics council over a Constitutional Court ruling related to Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s eligibility as a vice-presidential candidate in 2024.
The DKPP had received five complaints related to the ruling by October 14, 2026.

What people are saying
There is still a legal vacuum, or the law has not yet regulated what I mentioned.
There is no provision stating that DKPP decisions are binding on the president or the House in deciding whether to approve someone as a KPU or Bawaslu commissioner, or at lower levels.
