Derek Law elects free agency after stint with Arizona

Reliever Derek Law is a free agent after leaving the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The team designated the 36-year-old right-hander for assignment in mid-September, and he cleared waivers before being sent to Triple-A.

Arizona signed Law to a minor league deal in January while he was recovering from flexor tendon surgery.

A setback delayed his debut until late August, and he followed his first outing with six scoreless appearances.

Law kept runs off the board, but his fastball averaged 93.2 mph, down from 95.1 mph with Washington in 2024.

Injuries weakened Arizona’s bullpen, including absences for closer Justin Martinez and left-handers A.J. Puk and Andrew Saalfrank.

Martinez is expected to return to the top of the depth chart in 2027, while Arizona has bullpen spots to fill because several frequently used relievers are free agents.
