Cemalettin Kani Torun joins Turkey’s AK Party, raising its seat count to 281

Cemalettin Kani Torun has joined Turkey’s AK Party after resigning from the Yeni Yol Party.

His move followed a decision to close the Gelecek Party, according to the account of his political path.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan presented Torun with his party badge before an AK Party leadership meeting.

The AK Party now has 281 members of parliament, following the switch.

Torun also announced that he had been appointed an adviser to the AK Party leader.

He said he would work on the “Terror-Free Turkey” process and Africa policy.

The change reverses Torun’s earlier stated preference to remain independent; no further next steps were given.
