Swiss health costs fall on paper as Tardoc delays hospital bills
Switzerland's basic health insurance costs fell on paper in the third quarter of 2026, compared with the same period a year earlier.
The average cost per insured person over the previous 12 months was 4,846 francs, down 60 francs.
The figures reflect the switch on 1 January 2026 to new payment rules for outpatient care, known as Tardoc and Ambulante Pauschalen.
Hospitals were slow to send bills during the change, so recorded outpatient hospital costs fell by 18%, or 176 francs per person.
The apparent savings may shift costs into 2027, when delayed bills are counted.
Many hospitals faced cash shortages and some used advances or loans to cover wages and purchases; the hospitals bear any interest costs.
Costs rose in other areas, including home care, psychological therapy and outpatient doctors, while the federal government agreed to six further cost-saving measures in late October.
