Rain-triggered landslides hit property in wildfire-scarred Summerland

Three rain-triggered landslides hit a family’s property in Garnet Valley, Summerland, this week, sending rocks, water and debris into a field.

The slides followed this summer’s Bald Range wildfire, which burned vegetation on nearby slopes.

Without that vegetation, the ground is more vulnerable to erosion and slides during heavy rain.

The Campbell family, whose farm was near the fire, fears another slide could reach their homes.

The regional district is monitoring heavy-rain risks and making sand and sandbags available to residents.

A provincial assessment also rates the risk of slides affecting Highway 97 and properties on slopes above it as high.

Geotechnical assessments are underway, but the sources do not say when they will be complete.
