China maternity insurance spent 101 billion yuan in first nine months of 2026

China’s maternity insurance fund spent 101 billion yuan in the first nine months of 2026, benefiting 33.55 million people or service instances.

Maternity allowance payments totaled 78.161 billion yuan, and the payments are now made directly to individuals.

China’s maternity insurance covered 260 million people nationwide.

Coverage has also expanded: some areas include flexible workers, many waive eligible patients’ out-of-pocket costs for hospital births, and all provinces cover eligible assisted reproductive technology.

These measures are part of efforts to make pregnancy and childbirth care more affordable and accessible.

During the 2026–2030 planning period, China plans to extend maternity insurance to more workers who are enrolled in employee medical insurance, including migrant and flexible workers.

It also plans to improve prenatal check-up coverage, refine insurance payment for fertility treatment, and expand direct settlement of maternity-related costs across regions.
