South Korea’s Democratic Party urges opposition to accept election review

Democratic Party floor leader Han Byung-do urged the People Power Party to accept the election special counsel’s findings in South Korea.

The call came as a special counsel began checking 2.47 million ballots stored at a counting site in Seoul’s Olympic Park on October 28.

The review follows claims of election irregularities, and Han said People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok had previously called for a special-counsel review.

Han accused the opposition of delaying the work over how it would be filmed, a claim the report does not independently verify.

He also demanded that People Power Party lawmaker Kim Tae-gyu resign from a parliamentary committee over remarks about the May 18 uprising and former president Chun Doo-hwan.

Han said his party had reported another People Power Party lawmaker, Joo Jin-woo, to police over alleged defamation of Kim Hye-kyung.

Han said the opposition should accept the review’s results, but the report gives no response from the People Power Party or timeline for the review’s completion.
