Mexico records 31 earthquakes, including a magnitude 4.2 in Chiapas

Mexico’s National Seismological Service recorded 31 earthquakes early on October 18.

The strongest measured magnitude 4.2 and occurred 130 kilometres southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, at 07:01.

It was 10 kilometres deep, and quakes of this size may be felt near their location.

Most of the recorded movements were between magnitude 3.0 and 3.9, which may be faintly felt or not noticed, depending on distance and depth.

Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca had the most activity, in a region with frequent earthquakes linked to tectonic plate movement off the Pacific coast.

The service also recorded a magnitude 4.1 quake near Matías Romero, Oaxaca, and a magnitude 4.0 quake near Pijijiapan, Chiapas.

The account gives differing locations and magnitudes for some Chiapas reports, but identifies the 4.2 event as the strongest in its morning summary.
