Brazil’s central bank limits credit offers and adds debt information rules
Brazil’s central bank approved three rules on 23 October to limit loan offers and give consumers more information.
Customers can block bank loan advertising from 31 March 2027, and can change their choice at any time.
People facing financial strain, including those with overdue debts or frequent use of credit card revolving balances, will receive extra protection.
Banks may offer them only ways to improve repayment, such as renegotiating or transferring a debt, and cannot offer extra cash in those approaches.
From 1 July 2027, banks must provide a debt dashboard showing amounts owed, payment status and the effect of new borrowing on a customer’s ability to pay.
The dashboard will help customers assess their debts before taking out another loan.
Pix loan offers will need prior permission, with at least 24 hours between enabling them and a first offer; the rules aim to reduce excessive borrowing, and banks must adapt their services to comply.
