Japan's Sunday Mainichi weekly to end print publication in April 2027
Japan's Sunday Mainichi will stop publishing its weekly magazine in April 2027 after more than 100 years.
Its final issue is scheduled to go on sale on April 27.
The magazine began in 1922 and is described by its publisher as Japan's oldest general-interest weekly.
Its average circulation was about 30,000 copies in fiscal 2025, far below the 1,567,000 copies sold by a 1959 special issue.
A shrinking market and higher material costs led to the decision to end publication.
The magazine is known for university admissions coverage, including rankings of high schools by the number of graduates admitted to the University of Tokyo.
Some content will move to digital platforms, while separate university and sports publications will continue.
