Ledger unveils $899 security-focused Android device after wallet thefts
Ledger has announced the Atom, a security-focused Android device for crypto and other sensitive tasks.
The London-based company’s device combines everyday Android apps with a separate operating system for activities such as approving crypto transactions.
Ledger says it is designed to work alongside a regular phone, not replace one, and will cost US$899 when it becomes available next summer.
The launch follows a hardware-wallet tampering incident in which spyware was reportedly fitted to genuine devices sold through resellers in South-east Asia.
Estimates of user losses differ: one source puts them above US$90 million, while another says more than US$86 million; Ledger has not confirmed the total.
Ledger says the Atom’s physical anti-tampering protections are designed to detect attempts to open the device or remove its screen, and to block the spyware involved.
The incident highlights that hardware wallets can still be vulnerable if devices are tampered with before reaching users.
Ledger says reservations are open, and the device is expected to go on sale next summer.
