Strategic Elements begins EdgeiQ Portable mining pilot program

Australian company Strategic Elements has launched a pilot program for EdgeiQ Portable, a handheld system for measuring underground mine spaces.

The device combines laser scanning, 3D mapping and onboard computing to work without GPS or internet access.

Its development included five underground field trials with a large mining company.

Working with Curtin University, the company has put an initial AI model on the existing device; trained on simulated mining data, it aims to predict excavation beyond planned boundaries and related dilution.

Tests produced results in about 100 milliseconds, showing the model can run on the handheld hardware.

A mining company has approved access to operational data to support further development during the December quarter.

Strategic Elements says it may hold an underground AI field trial in the March quarter of 2027, if technical progress and site access allow; no agreement for that trial is in place yet.
