Plant seed found growing in Russian man's eye after branch strike

Russian man Maxim Sleptosov was struck in the face by a branch while fishing in a remote part of Russia.

His eye became red, watery and painful, and he developed severe headaches and worsening vision.

Because he was far from medical centres, he could not see an eye specialist at the time.

Later, doctors found a germinated seed inside his eye, with a 3-millimetre root that had entered the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the white of the eye.

The seed was removed under local anaesthetic, and Sleptosov's headaches stopped immediately.

The account does not say whether he needed further treatment or follow-up.

They removed a seed that already had roots. But I was so relieved that nothing else mattered
