New tunnel aims to reduce flood risk in Nezahualcóyotl
After a severe storm flooded streets and homes in Nezahualcóyotl in September 2025, a new tunnel is now operating to reduce flood risk.
The Churubusco-Xochiaca tunnel is part of Plan Oriente, an initiative led by President Claudia Sheinbaum with State of Mexico Governor Delfina Gómez.
It can remove up to 16,000 litres of rainwater per second, carrying runoff to the Churubusco-Xochiaca regulation lagoon.
A collector and a pumping station with eight pumps help move the water, while work has also been done to clear and expand two regulation lagoons.
More than one million people across four areas may benefit, including residents of Nezahualcóyotl, Chimalhuacán and La Paz in the State of Mexico, and Iztapalapa in Mexico City.
The project cost more than 450 million pesos, and it is intended to ease pressure on drains during heavy rain.
