Self-employed groups split over Spain’s 11 November housing strike
Uatae and UPTA back a housing strike in Spain on 11 November, while another self-employed group, ATA, opposes it.
The strike was promoted by the Tenants’ Union and called by the CCOO and UGT trade unions to protest high rents.
Uatae and UPTA argue that rising rents threaten self-employed workers and local shops.
Uatae says 49% of self-employed people in its survey struggled to rent a home, while 43% spent between a quarter and half their income on business premises.
ATA says self-employed people should speak at the ballot box, not join street protests, and its president has pointed to the general election on 29 November.
ATA’s survey also found that many self-employed people have raised prices or are considering doing so as costs rise, while some fear having to close their businesses.
The strike is set for 11 November, followed by the general election on 29 November.
