Modi praises Asian Games medal winners and says India aims to host major events

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India’s Asian Games medal winners in New Delhi on Thursday and congratulated them for representing the country.

India won 85 medals, including 21 gold, at the Games, fewer than its 106 medals at the previous edition.

The medal winners included 17-year-old archer Kumkum Mohod, who earned two golds and a silver, and the gold-winning men’s and women’s cricket teams.

Women athletes won 38 medals, including 11 golds, Modi said.

He said India was becoming a credible host for international sports events, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen the country’s sports system.

India is bidding to host the 2036 Olympics, and Modi said the country intends to stage the Games.

Athletes presented him with keepsakes, including signed jerseys and Mohod’s bow.
