Kramp-Karrenbauer warns against AfD and Left party taking power
Former CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer warned against extremist parties taking power in Saxony-Anhalt and Berlin.
She said an AfD government in Saxony-Anhalt or a Left party government in Berlin could greatly change people’s lives.
She raised concerns about whether Jewish people would feel safe, and whether police and public officials would have support while dealing with radical groups.
Kramp-Karrenbauer said the Berlin Left party’s antisemitism and socialist ideas were incompatible with Germany’s political and economic order.
She urged lawmakers in Saxony-Anhalt not to elect AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund as state premier, and said the CDU lawmakers’ decision to leave the chamber during the vote was consistent.
She said democracy remained stable at its core, but warned that distrust of mainstream parties could make extreme politics more acceptable.

What people are saying
These governments would radically change the lives of many people.
For Jewish people, the question is whether they can still live safely here, whether Germany really is their home.
I consider the antisemitism and socialist social ideas of the Berlin Left party to be just as dangerous.
That is incompatible with our political and economic order.
