Turkish workers cannot be forced to retire, but disability pension rules differ

A Turkish worker asked whether a health problem could force them to retire and when to claim a pension.

Workers in Turkey cannot be forced into ordinary retirement by an employer or the Social Security Institution, which grants an old-age pension when the worker applies.

Disability pensions have different rules: a medical assessment must find at least 60% loss of work capacity for someone to be considered disabled under the system.

A general disability rating of 60% or more does not automatically qualify, because the agency assesses the loss of work capacity for an individual condition.

An employer may seek an assessment if a worker appears unable to do the job, but not simply because the worker has had surgery.

The columnist advises continuing to work in this case, saying the worker’s pension may rise as contributions continue on a gross salary of 180,000 lira.

The worker is subject to a retirement age of 60, but could apply for a disability pension or early retirement if eligible.

Any future application should start with the Social Security Institution, which will assess the worker’s medical report.
