Jung says Kim’s first 100 days will test his leadership
South Korea’s Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Cheong-rae said Kim Min-seok will be judged after 100 days as leader.
Jung made the comments on October 31, ahead of Kim’s 100th day in office on November 24.
He said Kim’s results and approval ratings will show how the new leadership is doing.
Jung said he was considering what role to take and what priorities to set after that point.
He also renewed his call to merge the Democratic Party with the Innovation Party, a proposal he had made when he was party leader.
Jung said the merger should be completed by January at the latest, so members joining from the other party have time to recruit eligible party members before the 2028 general election.
He said both parties’ members must support the merger and their leaders should work to win that backing.
Jung also called for unity amid internal criticism of President Lee Jae-myung and the governing camp.
Former Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae said Kim Min-seok’s performance and approval ratings would be judged around 100 days after Kim took office.
Jung said he was considering what role to take and what political message to promote after that point.
Kim had pledged during the leadership race to raise the party’s approval rating by 10 percentage points within 100 days.
Jung also said he hoped to complete a merger with the Rebuilding Korea Party by January, ahead of the 2028 general election.
Some pro-Lee Jae-myung lawmakers criticized Jung’s remarks as irresponsible and divisive, while Jung urged party members to work together.
