Flamengo beat Vasco 4-1 to strengthen lead in Brazil’s top league

Flamengo beat Vasco 4-1 in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, opening a three-point lead at the top of Brazil’s Campeonato Brasileiro.

The result leaves Flamengo on 73 points and Palmeiras on 70, with five rounds left in the season.

Vasco coach Pedro Emanuel made several changes to save players for Sunday’s Brazilian Cup semi-final against Palmeiras, and said he would make the same choice again.

Flamengo’s Pedro scored twice, while Samuel Lino also netted twice; Lescano scored Vasco’s only goal.

Vasco have 38 points and sit 13th, close to the relegation zone, so the club also needs to fight for league survival.

Flamengo’s next league games include a meeting with Palmeiras, while the teams are separated by three points as the title race enters its final stretch.
