Kwon Young-se Signals He May Run for People Power Party Leader
Kwon Young-se said he may run for leader of South Korea’s People Power Party if he believes he is best placed to help it win.
The five-term lawmaker said the party’s support is stuck because its focus on the right is pushing away moderate voters.
He argued that the party needs policy changes to broaden its appeal before its next leadership election, expected in August.
Kwon said a leader who moves further right just to control the party would struggle to win the coming general election.
He expects winning the general election to dominate party debate from late December through January or February.
Kwon also advised Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon to focus on his duties as mayor rather than increase his political activity.

He said he would consider running if he were best suited to help the party win an election.
Kwon said the party’s support was stagnating because it had aimed too far to the right and lost centrist voters.

What people are saying
If our party is in a difficult situation again, and it is an election we absolutely must win, I am willing to step forward if I am the most suitable person for that.
The reason our party's support is stuck is that, by aiming too far to the right, people in the middle are leaving our party.
A leader of our party who says, ‘Taking control of the party is important, so I will go further to the right,’ is not qualified to lead our party.
Even if such a person takes the party leadership, would we be able to win the general election? It would be difficult.
