Newborn boy found alive beside a creek in Cosmópolis

A newborn boy was found alive beside a creek in Cosmópolis, in Brazil’s São Paulo state, early Tuesday.

He was in a narrow passage near Rua Guilhermina Kovaleski, still attached to his umbilical cord.

A local resident and his wife sheltered the baby and called police after hearing cries.

The baby was taken to hospital with a deep chest injury and then transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit in Campinas.

Doctors estimated he had been born about an hour before police were called.

Police are investigating a possible abandonment, after a witness reported seeing a woman enter the passage from a white car; authorities have not confirmed any link to the baby.

The local child protection council is following the case, and the baby’s condition has not been reported in the available information.
