South Korea’s president marks 100 years of Hangul Day

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung marked Hangul Day on October 9 with a message about the Korean writing system.

This year marks 580 years since King Sejong promulgated Hangul and 100 years since activists created Gagyanal to protect Korean language and writing during Japanese rule.

Lee said those activists studied, recorded and taught Korean despite repression.

He said Hangul supported South Korea’s growth after liberation and is now studied around the world.

The network of Sejong Institutes, which teach Korean, has grown from 13 locations in three countries in 2007 to 273 locations in 89 countries this year.

Lee described the language and writing system as part of South Korea’s national strength.

He urged people to support Hangul and said the next 100 years should expand its possibilities.
