CHP and Yeni Party to field separate candidates in Üsküdar deputy mayor vote

Üsküdar’s municipal council in Istanbul is due to choose a new deputy mayor on October 20.

The vote follows the death of deputy mayor Dündar Ziya Gültekin in a traffic crash in Düzce.

Mayor Sinem Dedetaş has been detained, according to one account of the events.

CHP and Yeni Party will run separate candidates, rather than sharing a nominee as they did in the first vote.

The council has 23 members from AKP, nine from CHP and nine from Yeni Party.

An earlier vote won by CHP was annulled, and the next vote was disputed after four CHP members switched to AKP before it took place.

AKP won that second vote, according to the account of the previous election.

The council is set to meet at 10 a.m.

on October 20 to choose the new deputy mayor.
