South Korea to raise fines for repeated corporate disclosure violations
South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission will raise fines for large business groups that repeatedly break corporate disclosure rules.
The revised rules take effect Monday, though no calendar date is given.
They apply to groups with assets of at least 5 trillion won, or about US$3.72 billion.
These groups must disclose major matters involving unlisted affiliates and large transactions within the group.
The new fines rise with repeat violations: 10 percent for a first repeat, 30 percent for a second and 50 percent for a third or later one.
The current rules instead raise fines by 10 percent for four to six violations over five years, and 20 percent for seven or more.
The change is meant to strengthen oversight and help prevent an unfair concentration of economic power.
