Deep earthquake off Mie causes shaking in Fukushima and across Japan
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore of Mie Prefecture at about 7:15 a.m.
on November 1.
The quake was unusually deep, with its focus about 350 kilometres below the surface.
Fukushima towns of Okuma, Futaba and Namie recorded the strongest shaking, at intensity 3 on Japan’s scale.
Shaking of intensity 2 was recorded across a wide area from Hokkaido to Tokyo and Kanagawa.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the pattern may be an “abnormal seismic intensity” zone, when a deep quake shakes places far from its source more strongly than nearby areas.
There was no concern about a tsunami, and no further developments were reported.
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off southeastern Mie Prefecture at about 7:15 a.m. on November 1.

Fukushima Prefecture recorded the strongest shaking, at a maximum seismic intensity of 3.
Intensity 2 shaking was recorded across a wide area from Hokkaido to the Tokyo and Kanagawa areas.
The agency said the pattern may have been caused by an anomalous seismic intensity zone, and there was no tsunami concern.
