Nearly half in three Tohoku prefectures took safety action after quake alert

Nearly half of those surveyed took action after an earthquake alert before shaking began in April.

The magnitude 7.7 quake struck offshore of Sanriku on April 20, and Aomori Prefecture recorded the strongest shaking, at Japanese intensity 5 upper.

The survey covered 358 people in Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi who received the alert before they felt the quake.

44.1% took protective steps, such as sheltering under a desk.

Another 3.6% checked for hazards such as falling furniture, while 2% warned family members; together, these groups made up 49.7%.

The findings show how many people acted to improve safety after receiving the warning, but no further action is described.
