Free osteoporosis checks offered at São Paulo metro station

On World Osteoporosis Day, free bone-health checks are available at Barra Funda station in western São Paulo.

The service is open to everyone from 9 a.m.

to 4 p.m., with doctors linked to Brazil’s ABRASSO association.

Visitors can use the FRAX tool to estimate their fracture risk, get a heel-bone test and ask specialists about diagnosis and prevention.

Osteoporosis weakens bones and can progress without symptoms, so some people only learn they have it after a fracture.

Brazil’s Health Ministry estimates that about 10 million people live with the condition, but only 2 million know they have it.

People aged 50 and older face higher risk, and women after menopause are also more affected.

Early diagnosis relies on medical assessment and tests such as bone-density scans, while prevention includes enough calcium and vitamin D, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol.
