Jeongeup to start second Gamgok Stream flood-control project

The city of Jeongeup in South Korea is moving to its next river project after years of work on Gamgok Stream.

The Gamgok district project, which began in 2021, is due to finish at the end of October.

It covered the stretch from the stream's meeting point with Wonpyeong Stream to Hwabong Bridge and cost 39.1 billion won.

The city will then begin a 316 billion won project in the Tongseok district, from Hwabong Bridge to the Honam Expressway.

Work there will build or strengthen 3.72 kilometres of embankments and replace nine ageing bridges.

The plans also include three structures to limit riverbed erosion and one movable weir to control water levels, aiming to strengthen flood response.

Jeongeup says the two projects are intended to reduce repeated flooding and protect residents' homes and farmland.
