Sifan Hassan withdraws from New York City Marathon after illness

Sifan Hassan has withdrawn from the New York City Marathon after an illness disrupted her training.

The 34-year-old runner from the Netherlands won the 2024 Olympic marathon.

She said she was not prepared to race as she had hoped, and the marathon is scheduled for November 1.

Hassan also withdrew from the London Marathon in April because of an Achilles tendon injury.

She has not raced since finishing sixth in New York in 2025, and she is now unlikely to compete again in 2026.

Hellen Obiri will defend her New York title after winning the race in 2025 and setting a course record.

Hassan’s withdrawal changes the women’s field, but the race will still include other leading runners.
