Foreign banks close China branches and shift toward wealth management

Foreign banks are reducing their branch networks in China as weak returns make their operations harder to sustain.

China’s financial sector is dominated by state-owned lenders, and foreign banks have been adjusting their strategies since gaining permission to serve local customers in yuan almost two decades ago.

Deutsche Bank (China) closed its Chongqing branch last month, after closing its Qingdao branch earlier this year, leaving it with four branches outside Beijing.

HSBC and Standard Chartered have each closed a Chongqing sub-branch in the past year, and HSBC also shut a Beijing sub-branch this year.

Instead of relying on physical branches, foreign lenders are turning toward digital services and wealth management and focusing on core clients.

The closures show how foreign banks are trying to strengthen their foothold in a market where local state-owned lenders dominate.
