French student union leaders have political ties but limited role in protests

Student protests are under way in France, and several student union leaders have appeared on television to present students’ demands.

Two prominent leaders have political connections: Ryad Rani ran on a left-wing municipal list, while Nathanaël Combary supports Gabriel Attal’s campaign.

Both graduated from high school this year, but their union mandates run until elections in October.

France has three main high school student unions, and fewer than 1% of students belong to any union.

The Union syndicale lycéenne says it has 3,500 members.

A sociologist says the unions mainly act as spokespeople and have little power to call or end strikes.

Their political ties and small membership have raised questions about how well they represent students, though one school leader says they can still speak for their generation.

What people are saying

For now, they act as spokespeople. In reality, they decide very little.
