Rotherham United Women propose £9.5m Millmoor sports village

Rotherham United Women have proposed a £9.5m redevelopment of Millmoor, the former football ground in Rotherham, England.

The early-stage plan includes a 2,000-seat stadium and a national centre for girls’ and women’s football.

Millmoor was home to Rotherham United for more than a century, until the men’s team left in 2008; demolition of the site is now under way.

The proposal also includes community sports facilities, such as padel courts, a possible low-cost gym and space for other sports.

The club says the centre could support players from grassroots level to elite performance and attract talent from across the UK.

The two-week public consultation starts on October 26, with residents, schools, charities, businesses and sports groups invited to share views.

Feedback will help shape the next stage, with further discussions planned with the site owners, the council and potential funding partners.

For nearly 20 years we’ve talked about what Rotherham lost when football left Millmoor. Maybe it’s time we started talking about what Rotherham could gain.

We're at the beginning of those conversations, and there's a huge amount to work through, including funding, feasibility and listening to what the town actually wants.
